For Ukraine brides the wreath was a symbol of innocence and it was also connected with the girl's braid. These symbols are shown in folklore motive of the lost wreath getting to the groom, in expression "to ruin a wreath" which means loss of innocence. Married women didn't usually wear a wreath, a widow who is getting married again and a Ukraine bride who has lost virginity before a marriage does not usually put on a wreath. A dream about a lost wreath foretells seduction.
But however the wreath is mostly as the maiden headdress for Ukraine brides. Various flowers were used for making wreathes: rosemary, guelder-rose, laurels, mirt, grapevine, basil etc. Leaves of garlic, onion, pepper, red a thread, ears of bread, oats, were used in Ukrainian bride's wreathes for safety, childbirth, love, wealth or happiness. When a girl got married, her wreath was hung up near icons, or it was given to Ukrainian bride's mother or girlfriend.
After the wedding the wreath was used for the medical and magic purposes: it was put in a cradle for the child to grow healthy; it was given to a child as a powder when he was frightened; it was used for healing children's sleeplessness and other illnesses; it was given as an amulet to sons when they went to war.
