It is not known for sure when wedding rings appeared, but their occurrence is being connected to Ancient Egypt. They played the role of a seal then, with their help pharaohs transferred their authority and their will through the state representatives. After that rich Egyptian women started to wear golden rings as an ornament, and also silver, bronze rings and rings made of glass or clay for less solvent Egyptians. In Greece and Italy the art of manufacturing rings was improved. In Ancient Rome they specified the social status of inhabitants: noble people could wear golden rings, common people - silver rings, and slaves - metal rings.
Wedding ceremony was invented by the Romans: the groom gave the parents of the bride a simple metal ring as a symbol of obligations in marriage and his ability to provide a wealthy life for the bride. Marriage at that time was like a deal. Initially a wedding ceremony was very important and it was considered to mean the end of a successful engagement. Only much later, during Christianity, the ring became part of a wedding ceremony. But it hadn't happened at once. Only at the end of II century A.D. spouses started to exchange bronze rings during the wedding ceremony. In III century A.D. wedding rings were made of gold. They put a ring on the ring finger of the left hand for Catholics and of the right hand for Orthodox Christians. It was considered that this finger has a vein of love which goes directly to the heart. As a consequence this legend turned into a well-known tradition.
