The first marriage agencies appeared in the famous city on the Neva River in the middle 80s. Leningrad promptly developed. Plenty of experts from all parts of the Soviet Union came to the city of the three revolutions.
However, to arrange a private life in the enormous mega-city to people who have been pulled out from the habitual social environment, was not so simply. The clubs like "for those who is over thirty" aiming at the creation of the strong socialist families did not cope with the problem, that is why the government decided to make a courageous experiment. In 1986 the special psychological service was organized in the city, aiming at matchmaking lonely people with the decision of their problems. Efficiency of its work has surpassed all expectations. Thousands the marriages were made not on heavens, but in agency "on Furmanovka" as St. Petersburg inhabitants joked then.
Tens thousands of potential grooms and brides from all over Russia were submitted to the database. There was even a line as long as one year to get "on service". And although this family service worked exclusively for Russia and other republics of the former Union, its experts have quickly oriented in conditions of the market and have started export of brides to the West.
