The proverb says "Too many peoples - too many traditions", and the process of matchmaking is not exclusion. There are many nations, which have rather strange traditions of this process, for example, in Bremen (Germany) if you want to marry a young lady you should take a broom and go to the city hall to put everything in order. While the groom sweeps, the bride looks at him attentively. If he is diligent, the house will be in order, too.
On the Hebrides the groom must spend the night before wedding on the "wall of love" at the edge of a rock. If he falls asleep, the bride after his funeral waits for another interesting person.
On the Nicobar Islands the groom takes service with the future bride for a half of a year. If he proves that he is the best man in the world the parents declare him the husband of their daughter, if not they send him back and wait for another one.
And some historical facts: There was a time in Vietnam when the groom had to work for the bride's family about 5-6 years for her repayment.
In Ancient Sparta the bachelor's life was not approved, when a man reached his 30 years, he was caught by women on the spring's celebration and was beat with birches at the bottom of the statue of marriage.
